Air Traffic Control
As an Air Navigation Services Provider (ANSP), our core service is the provision of Air Traffic Management (ATM) services.
We are proud to be the ANSP for Edinburgh, Scotland’s
busiest Airport, where we provide both tower and ground, as well as approach Air Traffic Control (ATC) services. We are also the Air Traffic Engineering (ATE) provider, operating, maintaining and upgrading the local Air Traffic Systems.
Additionally, we have the experience of managing the most intense single runway operation in the world at Gatwick Airport.
At both sites, we have a track record of delivering turn-key projects for our customers. These include replacement and upgrades to critical ATS Systems, including selection and procurement of equipment, as well as concept development and capacity enhancements.

Drones/UAV
What starts as drones delivering critical items in a fraction of the time and at a lower cost than land-bound alternatives already has the potential to turn into an ecosystem of autonomous inspection and delivery vehicles, followed by flexible and cost-effective air taxi offerings.
The entire segment of potential new airspace users, generally referred to as ‘Future Air Mobility’ or ‘Future Air Traffic’, is gigantic in its forecasted industry scale and in terms of its potential.
Our industry will need to create an environment that allows for safe and effective integration of drones/UAVs into our airspace and operations. To achieve this, we have partnered with Skyports Drone Services Ltd. to develop and deliver a solution for the safe, equitable and scalable integration of Beyond Visual Line Of Sight (BVLOS) operations of drones.
This follows work that we carried out in relation to the integration of drones into airport environments. Based on a concept of operations tailored to the safe and flexible integration of drone flights into airport operations, we carried out trial flights at Gatwick Airport, demonstrating the viability before transferring the concept to any other airport interested in such integration.
Compliance Services & Solutions

In response to the market constraints for training, ANSL has developed a suite of training solutions across a range of subjects, such as On-the-job Training Instructor (OJTI) and OJTI Refresher courses, which now complement our training offering along with our Air Traffic Management (ATM) investigation courses.
We are also looking forward to the launch of an Assessor Refresher course soon, subject to CAA approval.
Our approach to training is as always, one of innovation and flexibility and our aim is to make training accessible and tailored to your needs. The courses therefore provide maximum flexibility by including options to learn virtually, or delivering the training at your unit to eliminate the need for time-consuming travel.
That is also the approach we have taken when we developed the self-led Human Factors course for ATCO Unit Endorsement Training which we are rolling out in July 2023.

Airspace
As an ANSP providing approach services, we manage airspace and air traffic within the airspace on a daily basis, as part of our core service. This experience and expertise, we deploy across the organisation for the benefit of our operations, our projects and innovations, as well as on behalf of our customers.
At ANSL, we believe in challenging the status quo and driving the air traffic management industry forward. This includes the airspace which we believe is needed to evolve in order to facilitate its future users and use cases. To achieve that, we participate in industry forums and working groups and provide insights and challenge to the industry, as well as driving initiatives ourselves to modernise the airspace and its use.
Such activities are designed to address today’s requirements, such as our work over the last few years, on the delivery of the Route 4 Airspace Change Proposal (ACP) for Gatwick Airport. Equally, we firmly believe that future needs and requirements need to be considered and delivered today, which is why we have partnered with Skyports Drone Services Ltd. to develop and deliver an integrated, flexible and scalable solution for integration of Drones/UAVs into the airspace and its current users.
If you need help to manage, improve, or evolve your airspace or you have an airspace related objective which we can help you achieve, then get in touch.
Training & Validations
Air Traffic Control (ATC) is a highly specialised occupation that requires structured and comprehensive training. In addition to the institutional licencing and rating training which qualifies an individual as an Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO), local and specific On-the-Job Training (OJT) is required for any operational position an ATCO intends to operate responsibly in.
It is known across the industry that ATCOs are in demand. Additionally, the lead-time to complete the required training is long which makes the ability to train and validate ATCOs in any unit one of the most critical tasks to ensure resilience and service levels.
Whilst recruitment of an ATCO can be a challenge, in many cases it is the OJT and ultimately achievement of a validation that is what most severely affects the actual operational capacity of ATC units across the nation. So, to ensure that the OJT process is as efficient, effective and predictable as possible is of great value.
We have developed tailored solutions for a variety of Airports in the UK, that have targeted this exact need to train and validate ATCOs locally. Our support ranges from the development of ‘greenfield’ training and validation plans, to the amendment of existing UTPs and UVCs and supported by the deployment of a simulator where none is available, seeks to optimise the training duration and success rate.
Based on the individual circumstances of any ATC Unit, we tailor our solution, focusing on the most effective proposal and best value for money for you. As most training related matters require regulatory approval, we support the engagement and argument (e.g. contribute to safety assurance) to facilitate timely approvals where required.

If you are in need of training and validation support, reach out and let’s discuss how we can help you secure validations for your ATC Unit.
TRM Training Facilitation
Team Resource Management is required to be reviewed each year as part of ATCO Refresher training (UK Regulation (EU) 2105/340). TRM concepts are equally valid for any team to be as successful as they aspire to be.
ANSL TRM training follows the Eurocontrol TRM concept. Eurocontrol trained facilitators deliver TRM training in facilitated sessions rather than specific knowledge teaching. In this way, the participants explore their own attitudes and behaviours in a comfortable setting to gain understanding of the impact of these and how positives can be promoted and negatives changed or mitigated. It also enables unit experiences to lead the discussion leading to bespoke outcomes.
TRM comprises of 6 high level topics
- Teamwork
- Team Roles
- Communication
- Situational Awareness
- Decision Making
- Stress Management
Sessions are in person are between 1.5 and 2.5 hours long (depending on group size) which enables full exploration of the topic and a team strategy to be produced. A second session can be held to examine team implementation of their strategies. Ideal group size to drive beneficial discussion is between 8 and 12 participants.
